PM Erdoğan calls on his supporters to boycott [Hizmet’s] prep schools

İSTANBUL
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called on his supporters to boycott prep school, which help students studying university and high school admission exams.

Speaking to crowd gathered at İstanbul Atatürk Airport to welcome him, Erdoğan said the corruption investigation is continuation of a recent row over government proposal to close the prep schools.

A controversial proposal that seeks to shut down prep schools, or test study centers that assist students in preparing for high school and university examinations, sparked public outrage and led to deep division among the public in the face of lack of a broader policy framework to address the structural woes in the education system.

One of the opponents of the government proposal is faith-based Hizmet Movement led by Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, which cited that without abolition of the central university exam, the move will cause serious troubles.

Calling on his supporters to boycott prep schools, Erdoğan took another swipe at the Hizmet movement, which, according to him, pulled the trigger of the recent corruption operation.

However, lawyer of Fethullah Gülen denied any involvement in the recent graft probe, strongly rejected any link to the case.

Three ministers resigned from Cabinet while four deputes parted ways with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) since last week.

US Court Dismisses Turkey-backed Lawsuit against Fethullah Gülen

A US District Court in Pennsylvania today dismissed a politically-motivated lawsuit against Fethullah Gülen, an internationally respected Turkish scholar, preacher and peace activist. Brought about by three Turkish nationals with the backing of the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan-led Turkish government, the baseless lawsuit alleged persecution of the Doğan Movement at the direction of Mr. Gülen.

Is Hizmet being subjected to genocide? (2)

In a recently leaked voice recording, which was not denied by those involved in it, Erdoğan’s son, Bilal, tells his father that an operation should be launched against the Hizmet movement. All these incidents indicate that the ruling party has used and will use laws in accordance with Erdoğan’s plans. Thus, a group cannot be destroyed solely with mass killings. It can be destroyed also with unfair and unlawful practices by passing specific laws, as we saw in many cases in the past.

Interview: U.S. Judge Says Turkey’s Judiciary ‘Taken Over’ By Erdogan

Even before the coup attempt in July, the judiciary was being essentially taken over by [then] PM Tayyip Erdogan. When the attempted coup occurred in July, within 24 hours there were arrest warrants for almost 3,000 judges. And it’s very clear, and in fact it’s been admitted by the deputy chair of the High Council [of Judges and Prosecutors, the body that selects and assigns judges], that that list of judges had existed for years.
