Today on World Refugee Day, I join the global community in showing support for millions of refugees around the world who were displaced due to conflict and persecution and who are going through an extremely difficult journey as a result.
It is distressing to see that the refugee crisis is getting worse each day and that millions of families are torn apart. In addition to the tragedy that these families have to leave their homes, they are sometimes faced with hate speech in their new homes. We should not forget that every human’s dignity should be respected and as part of the human family, we should open our hearts to everyone regardless of what part of the world they come from. We should all strive to ensure that refugees are welcomed in our communities.
I pray to God, the Most Merciful, to help us eliminate conflicts in this world so that no one should have to flee their homes to feel safe. May God give all those who have been displaced strength and perseverance to build a new life for themselves, their families, and their communities.
Turkish Cleric, Accused in Coup Plot, Calls Crackdown ‘Dark Pages’ in History
The Turkish Muslim cleric accused by Turkey of plotting a failed coup two months ago denounced the repression of his supporters, calling the crackdown “dark pages in world history.” The severity of the crackdown in Turkey has raised concerns in the United States and Europe that Mr. Erdogan has used the failed coup as a pretext to eradicate political rivals and groups he deems a threat to his power.

Just like the Seljuks and the Ottomans emerged and spread to the Balkans and the Middle East, the Gulen movement repeats the same experience in a different form – by participating in globalization. Globalization shakes the nation-state, dissolves society. The Gulen movement, despite being part of globalization, also protects the individual from the resulting side effects.

The individuals in the Hizmet Movement present to Americans a life of Islam which is not frightening, which, where the values and concerns relate primarily to those of family and faith.
The Gülen Movement in the public sphere
The Abant Platform is a good example of a religiously inspired social capital formation in a society with ideological, ethnic and religious fault lines. This platform departs from a belief that religion, and particularly Islam, can be a positive factor in social, political and economic life. The Gülen movement has been quite successful in utilizing its cultural and human capital in order to empower the civil society and expand the democratic space available for the formally excluded periphery vis-à-vis the centre.
