Y., the father of a 6-month-old disabled baby, was reportedly arrested almost three months ago over alleged links to the Gülen movement, which the government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt on July 15.

According to the TR724 news portal, Y. had been performing compulsory military service until he was detained and then put in a prison on Dec. 15 as part of an investigation launched by the Balıkesir Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Y.’s newly-born disabled baby has been left with the mother, who told the news portal that the baby underwent three expensive and crucial surgery in the past three months. The baby reportedly qualifies for 80 percent disability rating, and has Spina Bfida, a spinal defect that impairs ability to walk or stand.

Since the coup attempt on July 15, Turkey has turned into a hub of people victimized by the purge carried out by the Turkish government. The ruling party of Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused the Gulen movement of masterminding the attempt and launched a widespread purge aimed at cleansing sympathizers of the movement from within state institutions, dehumanizing its popular figures and putting them in custody.

The movement denies any involvement.

Why Erdoğan exploits anti-American sentiments

With dangerous and discriminatory language, PM Erdoğan exploits anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiment in Turkish society to demonize his opponents. Can Erdoğan win this game? If Erdoğan were confident enough about the corruption case, maybe he could. Instead of letting justice run its proper course, he used his political power to intervene in the judiciary and police forces. This must be considered the most important indicator of his fall.

Turkey’s tryst with democracy (2)

The anti-Hizmet moorings of the Erdoğan-led AK Party were present since the formation of the AK Party government in 2002. Since then, the Hizmet movement has become increasingly critical of the AK Party government on a number of fronts, including the lack of progress on the drafting of the new civil constitution and the alienating style and substance of AK Party politics.
