The 17-year-old grandson of Ali Şen, a former president of the Fenerbahçe Sports Club, died when his car collided with a truck in İstanbul province’s Şile district on Monday.

The traffic accident took place while Alp Ali Şen was driving towards the village of İmrendere in Şile with his friend Burak Efkan. Alp Ali Şen died at the scene of the accident, while Efkan was injured and taken to Şile State Hospital for treatment. The driver of the truck was detained following the accident.

Ali Şen learnt about his grandson’s death during a visit to Kosovo. As soon as he heard the news, he returned to İstanbul by plane. Şen was welcomed at the airport by Şişli Mayor Mustafa Sarıgül who offered his condolences to Şen, who then went to the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) in Yenibosna to see his grandson’s body.

Former Fenerbahçe manager Selim Soydan and sports commentator and former Fenerbahçe player Rıdvan Dilmen also went to the ATK to offer their condolences to the Şen family.

A funeral ceremony was held at İstanbul’s Teşvikiye Mosque on Tuesday afternoon. Many celebrities from the art world, the sports community, politics and the business world attended the funeral. Şen was then buried in the family plot at İstanbul’s Zincirlikuyu Cemetery following the funeral ceremony at the mosque.

Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen sent a message of sympathy to the Şen family on Monday night. Gülen stated: “It is with grief that I learnt that Alp Ali Şen, the grandson of esteemed businessman Ali Şen — who worked for many years as the chairman of one of Turkey’s most distinguished teams, Fenerbahçe Sports Club — has died in a traffic accident. I wish infinite mercy and forgiveness from God for him and offer my condolences to his family and relatives, and to Ali Şen in particular.”

As evidenced by the findings I briefly described, there is a great contradiction. Those who criticize Gülen argue that he is a pro-Shariah Muslim, but he is also a hidden cardinal, extreme nationalist or an agent at the same time.

Test of Turkish society

Over the past 11 years, Turkey has been undergoing an important transformation. While it seems to defend secular and modern-looking Western lifestyles, it is trying to come out of the tangle of Kemalism, which is a regime disregarding democratic values of the West. Even if Kemalism had at first dreamed of establishing a real Western democracy, it was later defiled and turned into a hegemony of the elite.
